The Norfolk & Western Railway J-Class 4-8-4 engine No. 611 is owned by the Virginia Museum of Transportation and ended its two-year residency at Strasburg in May of 2023. I was there on the final day of service and was able to capture some images.
Norfolk and Western 611 is the only surviving example of Norfolk and Western's (N&W) class J 4-8-4 type "Northern" streamlined steam locomotives. This locomotive was built in 1950 and represents the pinnacle of the steam locomotive. In 1984 and was designated the official state steam locomotive of Virginia and is recognized by the Virginia Landmarks Register by the Virginia Department of Historic Resources.
