Description
Walk in and around the amazing Fort Jefferson and ponder how difficult it must have been to build this engineering marvel. Fort Jefferson was built in 1846 but was never fully completed. Higher powered firearms made the building obsolete before it was finished. It served as a prison during the Civil War. Fort Jefferson is part of Dry Tortugas National Park. Dry Tortugas National Park is in the Gulf of Mexico, about 70 miles west of Key West, Florida. It comprises 7 islands, plus protected coral reefs. Garden Key is home to beaches and the 19th-century Fort Jefferson. It is the least visited National Park as it is only accessible by boat or seaplane. It is a must-see for nature and history buffs alike!
