Artist's Description

This rare and endangered lady slipper orchid can be found in the pineland forests of NJ. The pine barrens provide the perfect soil for this beautiful orchid to grow and thrive. One thing that makes the pine barrens so suitable for growing this rare flower is the acidic soil. Lady Slippers require a type of Rhizoctonia fungi to break down its seed coat to enable it to germinate. The fungi grows well in the acidic soils of the pine barrens, but not so well that it overtakes and kills the roots and kills the plant. The fungi and the plant have a symbiotic relationship in the pines. Lady Slippers require many years to mature from seed to a flowering plant. It is illegal to remove these plants, their seeds or their roots from their habitat and due to their specialized growing requirements, they would not survive transplantation. It is best to enjoy them where they are if you are lucky enough to find them!

About Kristia Adams

Kristia Adams

I am a photographer located in the heart of the New Jersey Pine Barrens. I have had a camera in my hand for as long as I can remember. My first camera, which I received for my 11th birthday, was a little Kodak that took the 110 film cartridges. I used all my allowance money for film and processing. I have upgraded my camera a few times since those days and now I enjoy wandering my great state (and places beyond) photographing places that may not be here forever. I specialize in nature and landscape photography.
