Description
In the summer, the Milky Way core dominates the night sky over East Point Lighthouse, but in the winter, the core can not be seen and the constellation Orion rises over the lighthouse. I captured this image at the end of December and the lighthouse has been decorated for the holidays. Within a few minutes of taking this image, the clouds had rolled in and the stars could no longer be seen.
The East Point Lighthouse was built in 1849 at the mouth of the Maurice River which drains into the Delaware Bay, not far from the Atlantic Ocean. This lighthouse is a favorite among artists and photographers. Heislerville, NJ. East Point is one of the darkest spots in Southern New Jersey and is a great spot to observe the night sky without a lot of light pollution.
