The Pygmy Pine Forest in the New Jersey Pine Barrrens lays under a blanket of fog at sunrise. I had hoped to capture a beautifully colored sunrise on this day, but the misty foggy morning that I got also provide for some compelling images.
The Pygmy Pines lay in the Central Coastal area of the Pine Barrens. The pitch pine trees here do not grow much higher that 6 ft tall and some are full grown at just 4ft. When standing on the ridgelines (one of the few spots in South Jersey that has some rolling hills) you can see for miles over the tops of the trees. Scientists believe that centuries of exposure to periodic wildfires and poor soil nutrition have contributed to the growth habit of these trees.
I am a photographer located in the heart of the New Jersey Pine Barrens. I have had a camera in my hand for as long as I can remember. My first camera, which I received for my 11th birthday, was a little Kodak that took the 110 film cartridges. I used all my allowance money for film and processing. I have upgraded my camera a few times since those days and now I enjoy wandering my great state (and places beyond) photographing places that may not be here forever. I specialize in nature and landscape photography.
