Description
Taken at the former Pennhurst State School in Spring City, PA. This state institution was built to house "the feeble-minded and epileptic". It also housed orphans and disabled children. Pennhurst's history is a sad one, filled with a misunderstanding of mental conditions at the time and flat out patient abuse. It operated from 1908 till 1987. Pennhurst is located a short drive outside Philadelphia in Spring City, PA.
The asylum now houses a museum and some rooms are set up with artifacts from the hospital. This room was set up as a sewing shop.
If you visit, be sure to book a tour through their website. They are very serious about prosecuting trespassers and there are cameras everywhere.
