Description
This beautiful little micro forest is a macro shot of British soldiers lichen (along with some other species) growing on an old wooden bench. Although they look like it, lichen are not plants. They are a two different organisms (a fungus and an alga species) that share a mutualistic relationship. The algae supplies nutrients from photosynthesis while the fungi provides the water and other necessary nutrients. This image shows a whole world that we might not see if we were to just walk by an old bench.
