Description
The Stony Point Lighthouse was built in 1826 and is the oldest lighthouse on the Hudson River. The Erie Canal had been completed the year prior and the increased shipping traffic necessitated the need for a navigational light in the area. It was built on the grounds of the historic Battle at Stony Point which saw the British suffer major losses during the Revolutionary War. The lighthouse was in operation for nearly 100 years and was decommissioned in 1925.
