Description
In its hey day, Winslow Junction, NJ was a busy place. In the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, and Atlantic City was the place to be. Two competing railroad companies took advantage of the flat terrain and built two rails side by side. The Pennsylvania Railroad and Reading Railroad both built lines to the shore. In the 1930’s, demand for rail travel to the shore began to decline and the two companies could no longer compete. The lines were merged making the Pennsylvania – Reading Seashore Lines. A junction tower and switch was built at Winslow Junction to facilitate the combining of lines. The famous Blue Comet train used to travel along this rail line.
Nowadays, the rail yard is mostly quiet with the some old trains sitting on the defunct lines. Some trains are in varying states of restoration, but it appears that restoration has been at a standstill for a while. Shamefully, some of the more recently painted engines have fallen victims to graffiti. A new rail line was constructed along side the old and is used as a passenger line running from Philadelphia to Atlantic City. There is still a presence here of the South Jersey Railroad Company which still runs a short freight line to parts of South Jersey.
The two locomotives pictured, SRNJ F7 727 and 728, are former Bessemer & Lake Erie locomotives that have been on the SRNJ roster former the past two decades.
