Artist's Description

Some old balls sit in a room at Pennhurst State School and Hospital as if waiting for children to come and play.

This state institution was built to house "the feeble-minded and epileptic". It also housed orphans and disabled children. Pennhurst's history is a sad one, filled with misunderstanding of mental conditions at the time and flat out patient abuse. It operated from 1908 till 1987. Pennhurst is located a short drive outside Philadelphia in Spring City, PA. If you visit, be sure to book a tour through their website. They are very serious about prosecuting trespassers!

About Kristia Adams

Kristia Adams

I am a photographer located in the heart of the New Jersey Pine Barrens. I have had a camera in my hand for as long as I can remember. My first camera, which I received for my 11th birthday, was a little Kodak that took the 110 film cartridges. I used all my allowance money for film and processing. I have upgraded my camera a few times since those days and now I enjoy wandering my great state (and places beyond) photographing places that may not be here forever. I specialize in nature and landscape photography.
