The penitentiary was a first of its kind utilizing a radial arm type design with a central hub and "arms" of cellblocks radiating from the central hub. It was in operation from 1829 to 1971 and even housed Al Capone for a time. The building is a US National Historic Landmark and is open to the public 7 days a week.
