Artist's Description

Lucy was built in in 1881 by James Lafferty in South Atlantic City, New Jersey, which is now know as Margate. Lafferty was given exclusive patent rights by the US Patent office to make, use, and sell novel animal shaped buildings for 17 years. Lucy (originally named Elephant Bazaar) was built to sell real estate and attract tourists to the area. Lafferty would take investors up to the howdah carriage to survey parcels of land available for sale. He built 2 other elephant buildings, one in Coney Island area of New York and one in Cape May. Only Lucy exists today. Lucy has been many things over the years including a restaurant, business office, cottage, and tavern. These days, she spends her days delighting guests with her presence and her history. Tours are available daily.

About Kristia Adams

Kristia Adams

I am a photographer located in the heart of the New Jersey Pine Barrens. I have had a camera in my hand for as long as I can remember. My first camera, which I received for my 11th birthday, was a little Kodak that took the 110 film cartridges. I used all my allowance money for film and processing. I have upgraded my camera a few times since those days and now I enjoy wandering my great state (and places beyond) photographing places that may not be here forever. I specialize in nature and landscape photography.
