Description
Hallgrimskirkja is probably the most striking building in Reykjavik and the most famous church in Iceland. This beautiful Lutheran church was commissioned to be built in 1938 and wasn't totally finished until 1986. The architect, Gu Samon, designed the church to resemble the basaltic lava formations found throughout Iceland. The church boasts a large pipe organ and an amazing observation tower that affords views of all of Reykjavik and the surrounding landscape. The chimes from Hallgrimskirkja can be heard on the hour. Just remember this if you visit the observation deck!
