Artist's Description

This beautiful male box turtle has a striking pair of reddish-orange eyes. Many times the males are distinguished from females by the color of their eyes. Males often times have brighter and redder eyes than the female. A better way to tell is males have a rounded plastron (bottom of the shell) and the females have a flat plastron. Eastern box turtles are becoming increasingly more scarce as habitat is lost and by people collecting them for pets. Box turtles have a small home territory of about a square mile where they spend their entire lives. If moved from their territory they will spend their lives trying to get back there.

About Kristia Adams

Kristia Adams

I am a photographer located in the heart of the New Jersey Pine Barrens. I have had a camera in my hand for as long as I can remember. My first camera, which I received for my 11th birthday, was a little Kodak that took the 110 film cartridges. I used all my allowance money for film and processing. I have upgraded my camera a few times since those days and now I enjoy wandering my great state (and places beyond) photographing places that may not be here forever. I specialize in nature and landscape photography.
