Description
This fire tower sits atop Apple Pie Hill located in Tabernacle Township, New Jersey. Apple Pie Hill is the highest point in the New Jersey Pine Barrens at 209 feet above sea level. The tower rises 60 feet up in the air and affords a beautiful 360 degree view of the surrounding pinelands. On a clear day, both Atlantic City to the east and Philadelphia to the west can be seen. This centrally located tower is an important component to the fire watch system in the pinelands of NJ. Multiple towers protect the pinelands. Watchers sit in the towers during periods of hazardous dry weather to alert crews to any signs of smoke. Although the preservation of the pine barrens depends on fire (the pitch pines of the pine barrens cannot germinate without fire), fire can also be devastating to the area and quickly become out of control damaging wildlife and property in its path.
