Artist's Description
The remains of the sinking concrete ship, the SS Atlantus, sit off the jetty at Sunset Beach on Cape May Point. The ship launched in 1918 and was used to transport troops home from WW I and later to haul coal in New England. After 2 years in service, it was sent for salvage in Virginia. It was later bought to use in a ferry docking project. The ship was repaired and towed to Cape May in March of 1926 and ground breaking ceremonies commenced. In June of that same year, there was a storm and the Atlantus broke free of its moorings and ran aground at Sunset Beach. All attempts to free the ship failed and there she sits today, deteriorating. The ship is broken into 3 pieces with the stern being the most visible portion.
About Kristia Adams
I am a photographer located in the heart of the New Jersey Pine Barrens. I have had a camera in my hand for as long as I can remember. My first camera, which I received for my 11th birthday, was a little Kodak that took the 110 film cartridges. I used all my allowance money for film and processing. I have upgraded my camera a few times since those days and now I enjoy wandering my great state (and places beyond) photographing places that may not be here forever. I specialize in nature and landscape photography.
